Nicaragua, the poorest country in Central America and the second in the Western Hemisphere, has widespread underemployment and poverty.
Hogar Luceros del Amanecer Foundation at (https://hogarlucerosdelamanecer.org/), is a non-profit organization that focuses on improving the living conditions of the poorest families in the City of Camoapa, Nicaragua.
Hogar Luceros runs a school program that provides educational and social services in the remote and poor families of Camoapa, where children are unable attend the regular school due to lack of transportation money and the girls are victims of early pregnancy.
The school holds feeding centers, after-school classes, gardening and environmental workshops, recreation, homework tutoring, and crafts workshop for parents of the students.
The project involves bringing education closer to children without transportation money to attend regular school by constructing classrooms. One classroom was completed in 2020. The Dept. of Education provides at least two teachers to conduct primary and secondary level classes.
This project focuses on girls, aged 12-16 who are victims of young pregnancies. Girls are taught healthy pregnancy process – attending pre-natal control, taking quality nutrition, birthing preparation, accessing education and training workshops.. They learn about child-care, and are encouraged to have positive attitudes. They gain self-knowledge, self-acceptance, self-worth and self-care.
The project began with 8 youths and grew to 65 within the 13-year span.
Project Awareness: is a Radio Program broadcast that is held every Thursday to sensitize the community, mothers, adolescents, neighborhoods. Learning workshops for both parents and their pregnant adolescent children are organized.
