LESSON 1 - SULYAP SA KULTURANG PILIPINO
INTRO

New first lesson is SULYAP SA KULTURANG PILIPINO
- A hands-on experience of Philippine material culture
- Filipinos play instruments in group. Solo instruments such as Kalinga tongali (noseflute), kubing (Jew’s harp), hegalong (native guitar) are used for courtship and worship to God.
Featured instruments:
Remarks on kulintang: Pre-Islamic. Therefore, not to be tagged as Muslim music/instrument
Pattern is in the mind. Among the Tboli’s pinapanaginipan ang pattern at ipinagkakaloob ng diwata.
Featured weaves:
Feature: one set of Tboli costume
Blouse, malong as skirt, malong as sablay, helot(belt) kwintas, hikaw, slaong (salakot)

Remarks on helot: 3 kilos, made of brass, drives away snakes in forest (nag- iingay kasi), unisex
Trivia: In most IP groups, mas vain ang mga lalaki, mas maraming borloloy, mas malalaki ang hikaw, belt, headdress, etc.

Ifugao – groom headdress and belt vs. bride dongdong headdress Kalinga - male headdress kalugo vs. ong-ong headband of female
Remarks on kalugo headdress: Not only for aesthetics but also functional. Keeps nga-nga elements.

A.. CULTURAL REDEMPTION AS MINISTRY
The taking back of creative and artistic expressions from ungodly use to use in Christian worship and celebration.
- This includes cultural heritage in music, dance, rituals and related arts.
Redeeming Filipino music and dance for Christian worship is premised on the following principles:
Jn 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Rom 8:22-23 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
KALOOB is committed to escalate the contextualization of Christian doctrine through scholarly study of Filipino paradigms and material culture and their great potentials as tools for evangelism and edification. As such, KALOOB has a pool of researchers for dance, music and theories. As much as possible, researches are done on a first-hand basis to ensure authenticity and contextual correctness. Such researches are documented on video, audio, and print and are made available for Christian churches’ reference.
Based on these researches, KALOOB transfers these skills and knowledge through lectures, seminars and hands-on training of enthusiasts. Weekly and monthly trainings are regularly conducted at the KALOOB headquarters by KALOOB trainors to church worship teams of different denominations. Major national symposia are also held regularly.
KALOOB continues to develop its music and dance troupe to perform-worship or “prayform” at Christian events and gatherings thereby promoting the appreciation and use of indigenous cultural heritage through application in Filipino-style contemporary worship.
